The Holy Grail etc

Whilst the no-tables-for-layout debate is settled amongst standards-compliant developers, it has to be said that the <div> and floats don’t QUITE get the job done without a fair amount of pain, particularly when putting together the 3-column layout that in itself is kind of a de facto standard. Hence, this becoming known as the Holy Grail of Layout – getting it right generally means a fair bit of planning trying to anticipate and deal with how it will behave in different browsers.
Luckily though, lots of other people have been there before to help you out with the hard work. Glish.com has had a great bunch of examples up for a while, and a guy called Matthew Taylor has done likewise more recently, with an excellent array including variations for %, pixels and ems.
